Vox Populi's September/October Issue Is Here!

[ ["Queers passed through here," graffiti in Ramallah, Palestine. Image by Al-Qaws.]
For Vox Populi’s September/October issue, we chose to focus on the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting themes of activism, expression, and representation. Now more than ever, we must recognize the fight for queer justice as an intersectional struggle, occurring across several different fronts – one of those being the aesthetic and artistic. The pieces compiled in this issue represent the breadth of the region’s LGBTQ+ presence, drawing from a variety of different cultural media, including music, literature, film, social media, and television. The stories showcase aspects of resilience from the queer Middle Eastern community and demonstrate active resistance against Western hegemonic narratives regarding LGBTQ+ existence in the region. These articles and interviews also critically question current normative responses within societies of the Middle East, and aim to contextualize LGBTQ+ normalcy within actual Arab and Muslim history. Finally, we also made it a particular goal of ours to include more Arabic content in this issue, in order to create a more accessible learning environment.

About Media Page

Jadaliyya’s Media page provides a critical lens from which to explore and analyze the media landscape in and about the Middle East and North Africa. It spotlights new and traditional media players, platforms, and reporting at the local, regional, and global levels.

Original articles featured in this page expand the disciplinary boundaries of media studies and communication to look at the intersections of the arts and all forms of representation. Also featured in this page are Jadaliyya's regular Media Roundups from across the region. These are prepared by teams that monitor the media closely on geographic and national criteria such as the Arabian Peninsula, the Maghreb, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, and Palestine. Some roundups pertain to topical themes such as Cities as well as a dedicated reporting of Daily Acts of Resistance and Subversion (DARS).

The Media page is a partnership with VOMENA (Voices of the Middle East and North Africa) which has consistently brought listeners deeply-informed and genuine voices that take listeners beyond the headlines into the richly diverse and fascinating world of culture and politics of the Middle East and North Africa.
